I started to use some of the Nautilus equipment at my local
gym, it felt good to start adding weight. The problem was this is more isolated
exercises and except for the Ab machine, it wasn’t really working my trunk. The
use of compound barbell exercises will engage your trunk as well as help build
usable muscle. These kind of exercises will engage the trunk for stability as
well as increase strength. The: squat, deadlift, overhead press, bench press,
and bent over rows. These are all compound barbell exercises and will increase
overall strength and stability. As most people are I was worried about changing
from the machines to barbell exercises, best decision I have made. My greatest
concern was hurting myself, the reality is that with proper technique anyone
can do these exercises safely. The amount of people who do these 5 barbell
exercises everyday is astounding. Most people are not huge bodybuilders either,
most of them are average people making positive changes in their lives. Barbell
exercises are safe for you to do, sometimes safer than the machines. The key
advise is to start light and learn the lifts, with proper form comes less problems.
Do all of the warm up weights and make sure to stretch. On non-training days go
for a walk, you would be surprised at how this lessens the stiffness. Don’t add
to much weight to fast or start out at too high of a weight, the progression
will add weight and soon you will be lifting more than you thought you could.
